Plan Your Engineering Teams Like A Group Ride 🏍️

Plan Your Engineering Teams Like A Group Ride 🏍️

  1. Ensure there are at least two experienced riders–Lead & Sweep
↳ The Lead is positioned at the head of the group, and the Sweep rides at the back of the group.
    ↳ Lead
    🏍️ Facilitates Pre-Ride Meeting.
πŸ’» Facilitates Design Discussion. 🏍️ Reviews the Route including Stops for Food & Fuel. πŸ’» Reviews the Implementation Plan, including Architecture for Quality & Security. ↳ Sweep
🏍️ Monitors the group for issues like falls, mechanical problems, and separation.
πŸ’» Monitors the team for issues like bugs, build failures, and collaboration. 🏍️ Stays with any riders who either fall behind, break down or get separated. πŸ’» Stays with any team member who is experiencing challenges. ↳ Both the Lead & Sweep need to know where the group is going and where they intend to meet.
  2. Keep the group to a manageable size
🏍️ Ideally, five to seven riders
↳ If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, separated by a few seconds, each with a Lead and Sweep rider.
πŸ’» Ideally, five to eight engineers
↳ Re-team large teams (8+). Ensure each team has two senior engineers
  3. Stagger your riding formation
🏍️ Keep the group relatively tight, but also maintain some space to give riders time to swerve, brake, and react to hazards.
πŸ’» Keep the team cohesive with a main project. Have smaller projects, maintenance work, and bug fixes ready to work on as well.
  4. Check the riders following using the rear-view mirrors
🏍️ Each rider should periodically check their rearview mirrors to ensure no one is left behind. Additionally, watch the leader for hand signals.
πŸ’» Cultivate a collaborative and supportive team that encourages team members to ask for and offer assistance.
  5. Communication
🏍️ Good communication is one of the most important aspects of group riding. Make sure everyone is on the same page before you set out.
πŸ’» Communication is key. The tools are important–Slack, meetings, and docs. Even more important is clarity, transparency, and active listening.

Building teams is a fundamental leadership task. Plan the structure, culture, and processes for dynamic and high-performing teams.
