People: How do you build such high-performing teams that are collaborative, great with stakeholders, poised in the midst of a production issue, and who over-deliver?
Joy (Me 😊): I cast a wide net, look for qualities instead of types, and pose meaningful questions.
🗝️ Cast A Wide Net
I appreciate my Recruiting partners. AND, I don’t expect them to do it all.
As a Hiring Manager, it’s my responsibility to put together the best team. I do this by filling my own funnel.
I fill my funnel by casting a wide net.
I join Slack communities like Black In Technology, Techeria, Tribaja, and SheTO because talent is everywhere, even though opportunity is not.
🗝️ Qualities Instead Of Types
When I interview engineers, I focus on their Qualities…
↳ Team Player
↳ Product Development Experience
↳ Resilience
↳ Leadership
↳ Experience with the Organization’s SDLC Process
Not Types…
↳ Read Protected Categories
↳ Tools, e.g., IDE
🗝️ Pose Meaningful Questions
First, I prepare the questions well in advance of the interview.
My questions are designed to assess the Qualities.
Ensure I leave ample time for the candidate to pose questions. Interviews are bidirectional.
Leaders, when building teams, keep the following in mind.
💡 Great candidates are everywhere–so look.
💡 Great candidates have human skills.
💡 Great candidates deserve our preparation and attention.
