Good old target fixation isn’t so good.
When on a motorcycle, this happens when the rider fixates on the hazard (what could go wrong), instead of looking safely through the bend (what could go right). See, a motorcycle tends to go where you’re looking, so look where you want to go.
In Engineering Leadership, target fixation looks like a cognitive bias where leaders become so intensely focused on a specific goal or metric that they lose sight of the broader context and alternative strategies.
🚫 Here are some more disadvantages:
↳ Impaired Decision-Making (set on a certain strategy and unwilling to explore alternatives)
↳ Intensity Errors (during high-pressure situations, overfocus can lead to missing important signals)
↳ Misaligned Solutions (great technical solution that doesn’t meet the business need)
↳ Low Team Morale (when the leader solves all of the problems, the team lacks ownership and can become demotivated)
✅ Instead, try this–
🗝️ Cultivate Adapatability
🗝️ Create Feedback Loops
🗝️ Empower Your Team
🗝️ Develop Cross-Functional Communication
