I have a client who recently got a new manager. My client is used to getting a new manager. In fact, they, like many team members, have had a new manager every 18-24 months–that’s a future post.
Unfortunately, this new manager started their first 90 days disrupting the team, project timelines, and cross-team relationships in an attempt to establish authority. The results were costly.
Here’s how to step into a new role and succeed.
π Exceptional Leader Launch Framework
π Phase 1 – Foundation — Centered on gathering information and understanding.
ποΈ Connect
β³ During the initial 30 days, spend the majority of your time getting to know the people and culture. Who’s on your team, what are their skills, and aspirations? Who are your stakeholders, and what are their challenges? Who are your customers, and what’s top of mind for them? What’s the actual culture — not the ideal.
ποΈ Learn
β³ Learning is vital and second only to connecting. Understand the business–its history and vision. How did the organization get here? Where does the organization want to go?
ποΈ Strategy
β³ Utilize the appropriate strategy. Take into account the stage, size, resources, and organizational goals. Then, develop a strategy accordingly.
π Phase 2 – Alignment — Focuses on creating a destination and moving toward it.
ποΈ Vision
β³ Create a compelling vision for your team, department, or organization to move them toward their goals.
ποΈ Align
β³ With your vision in hand, arrange the people, processes, and resources to align with its achievement.
ποΈ Early Wins
β³ Many agree that the early wins’ purpose is to establish credibility and confidence. Yet, Exceptional Leaders know the early wins that garner the most impact and benefit are the ones that belong to their teams. Strive for wins that feature your team. These wins illustrate your ability to plan, inspire, and deliver.
π Phase 3 — Relax and Reflect
ποΈ Self-Leadership
β³ Beginning a new role can be stressful. Take it in stride.
β³ Additionally, make time to reflect daily on your interactions, learnings, strategy, and most importantly, yourself. Self-Awareness allows you to course-correct and celebrate.
Along with excitement and potential overwhelm, change provides leaders with an opportunity to examine who they are, who they want to become, and how they wish to show up and succeed by going FARR.
