I was on a call the other day with several engineers–junior to staff, and someone expressed that there are 5% good managers and 95% others.
I would like to say that I was surprised by the sentiment, but I’m not. In fact, that’s why I decided to start advising and coaching Engineering Leaders.
Engineering Leaders, clearly, some things, if not a lot of things, are sideways.
Many Engineering Leaders have received little if any leadership development and are learning on the job.
The problem with that is that they are impacting teams and costing organizations. Avoid being penny-wise and pound-foolish.
I invite Engineering Leaders and Organizations to invest in their leadership development. Specifically, engineering leadership development, as it takes one to know and grow one.
Acknowledging growth opportunities can be challenging. However, it’s necessary.
