Few people are ever truly listened to. One of the greatest gifts a leader can give their team is to actually listen and hear what they are saying.
Leaders who listen well create company cultures where people feel respected, valued, and engaged. They build trust, resolve conflicts, and enhance their decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
Given the many benefits of listening, how does a leader improve their listening skill?
💡 Listen Until the End
↳ Be present and avoid planning your response.
💡 Feed Back What Was Said
↳ Summarize and restate what you heard. The goal is to ensure you heard what was shared so you can remain free of interpretation.
💡 Listen Without an Agenda
↳ Curiosity is your friend, if not your BFF. Strive to avoid judging. FYI, judging can look like interrupting.
💡 Practice the WAIT Principle
↳ Why Am I Talking? Before speaking, check in with yourself to see if what you’re about to say is more valuable than potentially learning from others.
Effective leadership relies on a leader’s ability to tune in to their teams, organization, and broader context. By respectfully listening, leaders elevate interactions, deepen connections, and become more successful.
