I don’t know about you, but I love when things go as planned. Buttoned up. On-time. Bug-free.
However, you and I know that it doesn’t work like that on more occasions than we can count. Sometimes sideways just appears to be the order of the day, week, and month.
My greatest lessons and learnings in both my career and life have come from “curves in the road.”
Be it the non-printing character in my Korn Shell script that eluded me for what felt like not quite eternity, but close.
Or, that time I deployed my fully-tested code to production and it didn’t work. After a couple of hours of debugging, I realized that the code was pointing to the sandbox server instead of the production server.
Those examples happened in the late 90s and early 2000s. Yet, I remember them like they were yesterday.
Additionally, I’ve not encountered them again in my career since. More importantly, I’ve shared this information with my teams so they could also benefit from my learnings.
Avoid blame and shame for your team and yourself — curves happen.
Leaders, remember, skills expand when the focus is placed on getting the lesson.
